Class 5

You asked for it, you got it - click here for a streamlined assessment flow chart that you can print up and hold in your hand while you practice.  This is customized to our situation at SnoBowl, so you can live it, love it, learn it.  The Class 5 Power Point presentation is in that folder, too.

Don't forget your online assignments, and your reading for Wednesday and Friday.  Check the syllabus if you have questions.

Class 4 presentations

Seems like a lot to remember, doesn't it?  It is.  But it IS doable (trust us on this!)  The key is...

PRACTICE.

Remember - practice hard so that game day is easy.  This WILL become second nature, we promise. But it only works if you practice, practice, practice!

Click here for the Class 4 course presentations, as well as a couple of other items of interest:

  • a guidebook for how to bandage everything under the sun using the materials we as patrollers have at hand, and
  • instructions for making your own cravats.  Save money, get creative, recycle your old sheets.

As for scenarios to practice - an easy thing to do is for one of you to think up a scene or situation that would generate the kind of injury you want your partner to assess and treat.  So, for example - what MOI up at SnoBowl (summer or winter, and don't forget the parking lot) would create a crush injury? A thermal burn?  A broken thumb?  An evisceration?  It's kind of gory to think about, but it's pretty easy to come up with ways that people can injure themselves in those ways up there, and it's our job to (a) do what we can to mitigate the dangers, and (b) deal with the injuries when they DO occur.

So practice.

And in case your imagination isn't quite as... well developed... as mine, some ideas for each of those injuries -
  • Crush injury - hand in car door
  • Thermal burn - tailgate grill flare-up or spill
  • Broken thumb - ski pole caught in brush, thumb caught on strap
  • Evisceration - attempting to huck one of the snow fences

Have fun.

Class 1 Presentations

Click here to get the PowerPoint presentations from Class 1.

As we discussed, NSP is in the process of upgrading their online resource bank and hopefully will have information for us by next Wednesday's class.

Log on to MyNSPKit in the meantime to peruse what resources ARE available.

Be sure and review the assessment information in the book before Wednesday's class.  On Wednesday we will work through secondary assessment and do some hands-on practice.

Thanks, everybody, for a great first class!

OEC Class Spring 2016

The SnoBowl Ski Patrol is hosting an Outdoor Emergency Care class March - May of 2016, for those interested in joining the National Ski Patrol.  This class is set up as a hybrid class, meaning that students may complete the class by fulfilling a combination of on-line and in-classroom exercises.  Note that students are best served by attending as many classroom sessions as possible, since every session will contain hands-on practice you'll want as a patrol candidate.

Here is the class syllabus.  Click for a larger (and therefore readable) version.

Welcome to the blog!

Welcome to the Elko SnoBowl Ski Patrol's blog!  We use this blog as a communications vehicle for current and prospective patrollers. It's not likely to be of much interest to anyone else, but hey - you're welcome to poke around if you'd like.
